inspiration: I recently heard a talk with Brene Brown called, “Do not negotiate who you are”. In it she speaks about something Maya Angelou said, “You are only free when you realize you belong no place- you belong every place- no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great.” Brene struggled with what Maya said because her life’s work is based on the principle of people needing to belong to feel safe and vulnerable. What she came to understand about what Maya said is that sometimes a person stands alone because they don’t agree with society or an institution and when they do that they truly belong to themselves. This deeply resonated with me. Many times in my life currently and in the past I stand alone for these reasons. I felt great comfort in this being put into words that I could then create this beautiful painting that depicts that “space for silence” when you stand alone but belong completely to your true self.
